“Alright everybody, breach and clear.” I ordered.
Perra moved to the door and fitted it with a small device. When he set it off, the door would be blown open and hopefully anyone inside will be too stunned to react when we came charging in.
“All set sir, let’s blow this thing open.” Perra whispered to me.
I gave him thumbs up and shouldered my M4. The explosive went off with a loud bang and the door flew open inwards. Butler was the first into the room, and paid dearly for it. Butler had managed to take out one of the men in the operations room, but as Butler shot, the other man in the room had managed to get a shot off and hit Butler in the chest before I put him down with a short sustained burst from my assault rifle.
The two men who had been in the operations room had died instantly from their wounds, however Butler did not. He had collapsed onto his back and his chest was bleeding profusely. I immediately dropped to my knees and began applying pressure to his wounds. By the time Maldonado had unpacked the med kit, Butler had begun to cough up blood. He began to gasp and grabbed hold of my upper bicep squeezing it tightly. His eyes turned and focused on mine.
“I’m sorry, sarge.” Those were his last words. His eyes rolled back into his head and his eyelids closed. I slowly got to my feet and looked around at all the others. They all stared at me with stone faces, except for Perra. He was shaking and I knew what was coming.
“God damnit!” Perra yelled as he slammed his fist against the wall with all his might.
I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and slammed him up against the wall. I got right in his face. I could understand his anger, but I wasn’t going to let it jeopardize the mission.
“Get a hold of yourself Perra! We still have a job to do! Do you get me?” I yelled forcefully at him.
“Yes, sir.”
Hopefully that would keep him in line. An emotionally unstable soldier can cause serious problems in the field.
“What do we do about the tower, sir?” Asked Maldonado.
“Isn’t it obvious, we level this bastard!” Replied Perra in a huff.
“We don’t necessarily have to. All the equipment in here is still working, I can just as easily disable the tower from in here.” Schultz piped up.
“What do you think, Sarge?” Winslow said as he turned to me.
-Blow up the communications tower
-Disable the tower
